As I have said earlier on, we are running an ftp server at megabit. The server is running vsFTPd and is currently serving 1900 users with a average load of 926.23. But with sendfile enabled in vsftpd the box only uses around 78% cpu of the Xeon 2.4 Ghz inside. Also only 450 megs of ram are used to serve these 1900 users.

Bandwidth is around 226 mbit/seconds. Total bandwidth usage will be reported on sunday when the party is over. Graphs, offcourse we have graphs. Look here for graphs that resembled the 9.1Terabyte we eventually pushed out of the box.

The box actually is responsive to logins, however a little sluggish (because of the disk io).

This proofs again that vsftpd rocks. In the past we had boxes serving 740 mbit/sec and last year at megabit a smaller box served 160 mbit with 2000 users. It looks we are gonna beat the 2000 users record this weekend!

It seems we uncovered a bug in Linux 2.4.26. If the load rises enormously to levels of 1000, the load counter does not work as expected. It seems it wraps at 1024. E.g. /proc/loadavg tells the following:

39.87 991.53 956.09 108/1881 25551

How can a box have a 1 minute load average of 39.87 will the 5 and 15 minute average is 900+. Furthermore there are still 1881 processes running. The load can't drop that fast. So it looks like this is a wrapping issue at around 1024.

Well this post is made using Movable Type 3. The upgrade was plain easy. Just copy some files around, run the mt-upgrade cgi and you're all done with upgrading.

Now wait till version 3.1 surfaces so we can use mt-blacklist again :)

Ohw, I also have updated my SparcStation 20 to 256 megs of ram. Only could I know find a nice purpose for it. An mp3 player for the living room is something that goes around in my mind.

We'll be leaving Megabit in about 45 minutes, taking the train back to lovely (ahum) southern Sittard. We had some nice two days here. Warm days but cold nights. Happy crowd in the big tent, and some fat internet pipe. Tuning the leechftp and trying to keep it up and running.

We had some jolt, shoarma and fries. Well I have the idea that this entry really looks like the diary entry, should such things come on a weblog our should they remain silent and private for eternity ?

Ah well, we'll be having the train of 18:05 from Ede-Wageningen to Sittard. Anyone that also goes that way are free to join us ;)

I am now running Debian Linux on my PowerBook Titanium, Dual Booting with Mac OS X.

The installation was quite easy, but however the 2.4.18 driver for the network card does not support GigE speeds, and well I'm on GigE here :)

So I installed the kernel-image-2.4.25 powerpc from Debian testing and now uname -ar calls 'Linux powerbook 2.4.25-powerpc #1 mer avr 14 15:38:38 CEST 2004 ppc GNU/Linux'

And now I have full support for everything including airport :) I Like ;)

UPDATE

Another benefit I discovered using Linux with XFree86 instead of Mac OS X is that the resolution of 1280x860 (or what it was exactly) looks much better useable onder Linux then under Mac OS X. I can easily cram 4 xterminals and gaim in one screen. Instead of the 1 xterm and msn messenger on Mac OS X, that is much better.

I'm not going to dump Mac OS X completely on the PowerBook, there are still some nice features of it I would like to use. For example tv out and DVD playing works on Mac OS X, as mplayer currently borks hard on the powerbook. Also standby and power management issues are better implemented on OS X, standby really works overthere.

Well I'm off for breakfast now, Ohw I forgot to tell, we are at MegaBit in one huge ass tent. Hosting a nice 400GB+ FTP server connected with GigaBit to the local network. Pushing around 400 mbit/sec with around 1000 users. The load is a little high (around 600). You can check it out here. It's currently a Compaq ML330 with 768 megs of ram, a 2.4 Ghz Xeon. The disks consists out of a 144 GB raid-0 array on a Compaq 641 Raid Controller, a 120 GB IDE disk, a 160GB IDE disk and 4x 18GB SCSI disks in a software raid.

What an horror, I just spend almost an hour to find this stupid line of spaces in one of my posts which screwed up the entire layout of the page. Because of the pre's surrounding it, it ofcourse would not wrap. But as this was some output from a serial terminal the pre's where there to make it look classic.

But no, there was a line of spaces behind it from here to china town. Which made it fail offcourse, thanks to White Russian I found it, and converted the pre snippet to a png picture to make the classicness survive. I'm not an HTML or CSS wonderboy, it probably will never validate, but at the moment the page looks fine in my eyes, and I'm not going to change it to make it validate, as long as I'm perfectly happy with it.

Also XHTML has to many strictness thingies in it, for example the closure of tags that in the past did not need closure, the requirement of & in URLs and some more things I don't really need or like. Ofcourse there are always evangelists. But hey I'm a network and system admin, I don't do webdesign. Just give me some nice big router or server and I'm happy. I don't need lines of code or html pages that I make up for dinner.

The website has been changed enough for now. I'll keep my hands off it for some time :)

Well this evening was quite some HTML and MT editing. Kirsten was busy updating her totally renewed site with the help of White Russian's templates for MT. And I struggled with CSS. I wanted to change the comments page to include the left menu bar. After struggling with it for an hour I realized that there had to be a float somewhere to fix it :)

Also I've installed MT-BlackList to keep those Comment Spammers away. Luckily it also has an remove after post option to remove current spam entries. And just when I looked spotting the URL for MT-Blacklist on mt-plugins I saw some other plugin I'm going to try and install :)

Last year I was a huge fan of Alias, an tv-serie about a female spy that spies for an evil corporation. During the series she discovers she doesn't work for the CIA as she always tought, but for SD-7 an evil spying agency. She becomes a double agent for the CIA and starts spying on SD-7.

I watched the series on the belgium channel VRT-1, but after season 1 they stopped broadcasting. So I stopped watching the series. But today I realised that I like the series and would like to continue watching it, well luckily there is TV torrents so I can download all old Alias and New Alias episodes and still watch them.

Yes, I started watching the series for Jennifer Garner (also the reason why I watched the movie DareDevil). Well still lotsa episodes to download, so I will go on with that for now :)

Finally the house is almost finished. Some small things to do:

- Buy a bookcase to put the rest of the stuff we have still in boxes
- Hang some lamps in the living room and bed room
- Nerdize the place

And that last is the point I will discuss here. At the moment I'm thinking of placing the SparcStation 20 in the living room as an media player station. However it's placed there purely because of logistic issues. The hole between the computer room and the living room is FULL. It already carries Coax (tv), Earth (electricity) and an UTP CAT5 cable. So there is no more room to add an extra cable for audio. So I tought let's play the mp3's on the SS20 and place it under the stereo and PSX. Another option I'm now realizing is that I could boot the PSX2 with Linux and use that as an MP3 player.

Further more the Coax Cabling has to be extended into the bed room so we can watch TV in there. But that's something for tomorrow, this evening or next week, has low priority.

The computer room itself has been settled but is running nasty hot this summer. Altough there are only 3 computers running 24/7 (of which 2 systems could be shutdown in the evening). The hamster is also living in this room (or gerbill or how you english people call this rodent).

And, we are now the proud owners of a Black cat! Ofcourse there are also pictures of the cat, that can be found here. We haven't yet found a name for the cat, and it hadn't had one when we picked it up from the pound this morning. But she's very friendly :)

Yesterday (after eating chinese food with Arjen), we started building this gigantic book case we bought at the IKEA. It was a lot of work, but the effort paid off. It's a really nice huge 185x185 bookcase waying 93 kilos!

We have still more work to do in the house, hanging lamps, cleaning up, cleaning out boxes and hanging up some nice things to decorate the house.

The computerroom is almost 100% done except for the posters that are coming at the wall (hopefully atleast one babe). Besides the computerroom, the toilet and kitchen need a little bit sanitary work. The toilet needs to be fixed and the sink in the kitchen is not really fixed to the wood of the desk.

Ah well, some more work for this weekend, afterall it's weekend after today :)

I recently acquired a Sun Sparcstation 20. The problem with the box is that it doesn't get any further than this when booting:



It is currently connected using a serial console because i'm lacking a keyboard and monitor for it. I've tried several things to try and make it boot, including:

- Removing disks and additional SBUS cards
- Trying to break into it using serial
- Trying to set the serial port from RS422 to RS232

UPDATE(15-07-2004 17:49): After receiving an Sun Keyboard from Stefan and using L1-N (Stop-N) the nvram has been resetted to factory defaults and i'm getting OpenBoot on my serial console! Issue resolved! (more)

Well I'm typing this from my new computerroom. We moved all Kirstens stuff this weekend and now everything is here in our new house. Still a lot of stuff to do but atleast the bedroom and the computerroom are as good as finished.

The living room will be still a lot of work as there are standing gazillion boxes with stuff we moved. However I'm happy that Internet is working fine and I can still do my stuff from here.

Only one great minus of living here, no car anymore, that means cycling or skating to work everyday (well atleast Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday).

Pictures of the house when we are done with it will ofcourse appear on the internet in short time :)
